Common questions about these results

Are these live investor returns?

No. These are the latest model NAV results from the published backtest. A recent date alone does not make a result an independently observed live record. Investor costs, taxes and execution can differ.

Why can a strategy lag for a year?

A tactical model can hold defensive assets during a rally or change positions during reversals. A short window can differ substantially from its full history. Compare cumulative returns over matching dates and inspect drawdowns as well.

How long has it spent below a previous high?

Its last high-water mark was 2026-10-06, 10 days before 2026-10-16, and it is -2.03% below that level now. The longest run below a previous high in the full backtest was 4.0 years. Recovering from a drawdown can take years, and a strong trailing return does not mean a past high has been regained.

Where can I check the signals behind these results?

The Signals tab on this page lists each dated model decision for the selected variant; for Pro strategies they are visible to Pro members. The methodology page explains the backtest assumptions.

SPY Band Timer + Out-of-Market (Sadek) — Tactical Asset Allocation Strategy

SPY Band Timer + Out-of-Market is Bill Sadek's own upgrade of his SPY 200-day band timer, which is also on BestFolio. The timer is unchanged: it holds 100% S&P 500 while the 3-day average of SPY stays above a band around its 200-day average, going in more than 3% above and out more than 5% below. What changes is where the money waits while the timer is out. Instead of T-bills it rotates among 8 funds that do not depend on US stocks: commodities, gold, US aggregate bonds, long and short Treasuries, short-term corporate bonds, European stocks and Pacific stocks. At each month-end it scores them on their 1, 3, 6 and 9-month returns, a quarter each, and holds the best 3, a third each. A pick trading below the average of its last 6 month-end closes goes to T-bills instead. A second version runs the rotation on its own, always invested.

On BestFolio's engine, net of 10 bps a trade, from October 1985 to October 2026, the timer with the rotation returned 11.6% a year with a -38.6% worst fall, against 10.8% and -33.8% for the same timer with T-bills, and 11.8% and -55.2% for the S&P 500. The timer was out of the market about 19% of the time, in 14 spells. Since 2008 the rotation added 1.6 points a year over T-bills (10.7% against 9.1%). The rotation alone returned 10.2% a year with 9.5% volatility and a -14.5% worst fall.
