Why do European investors need UCITS ETF alternatives?

Since January 2018, the PRIIPs regulation (Packaged Retail and Insurance-based Investment Products) requires a Key Information Document (KID) for products sold to EU retail investors. Most US-listed ETFs do not provide a KID, which means European brokers are legally prohibited from allowing retail investors to purchase them.

The solution is to use UCITS-compliant ETFs (Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities) that are domiciled in Europe (typically Ireland or Luxembourg) and listed on European exchanges like the London Stock Exchange, Xetra, Euronext, or Borsa Italiana.

This free tool maps 0 US-listed ETFs to their closest UCITS equivalents, including the ISIN (International Securities Identification Number) that you can use to find the ETF on your European broker. Each mapping includes a confidence level indicating how close the UCITS alternative matches the original US ETF.

Understanding confidence levels

  • Exact match — Same index, same provider, UCITS wrapper. Virtually identical exposure (e.g., SPY → CSPX).
  • Close match — Same or very similar index, possibly different provider. Very similar returns and exposure (e.g., VTI → VUSA).
  • Approximate — Similar asset class or exposure, but not the same index. Use with caution; tracking difference may be meaningful (e.g., IWM → IUSN).

Data is for informational purposes only. Always verify ISIN and availability with your broker before trading. This is not financial advice.
